Setting Grabit (server, ssl)

Grabit is a grabber.

A grabber is software that connects to a newsgroup server (which you set) and who gets what you want. Some grabbers have a kind of explorer that allows you to browse each group is to choose what you want to download, some also offer an integrated search engine.

There are several ways to download to your newsgroup server: using software or paying full but by combining the use of several free sites and software.

Grabit is well known because it is a fairly comprehensive free grabber.

This is not the one I use because I find it lacks some features, but you should be.

Assume that you have your setup information from your newsgroup server.

Setting Grabit: your newsgroup server

First, note that setting a grabber is often virtually identical to one another graber. You will always have to define in advance the information of your newsgroup server. And you can also define multiple servers.

Also note that the following tips can be applied to configure access to a binary newsgroup server. I'm telling you this because it may be that you can connect to a server without authentication in the case of newsgroup access text only.

The information you need to configure your server in Grabit are:

• your username (login)
• password (password)
• the server log (different for each provider and varies depending on the location and encryption over SSL or not, eg europe.provider.com, ssl.provider.com news.provider.com OR)
• server port (different depending on whether you use SSL or not)
• the number of slot maximum allowed by your newsgroup server

About this information, note this:

• list of name servers of your provider you would normally be given after registration. You will also find on the page dedicated to your provider on the website In-Newsgroup.fr

Setting Grabit: SSL

In Grabit, and as in other grabbers, if you intend to connect using SSL, you must check the box labeled "Encrypted server connection (SSL)" (or "This server uses authentication", "Authentication required", "Requires Authentication ", ...).

If you check this box, Grabit will display a message and automatically change your port (563 to 119 without SSL and SSL)

Then enter your user name 'Account name' and password 'Password'.

Remember to set the number of simultaneous connections to your news server.
Check the number of slots allowed in the offer to which you subscribe.

Setting Grabit: speed

Grabit does not have the means to set the speed of downloads.

This is also a black spot of Grabit.

Indeed, to change the speed limit will allow you to easily increase or decrease the speed if you want to surf the web together with Grabit downloads.

For if Grabit downloads the most of your download speed by, you can not surf at the same time, or see very slowly.
